Recycling of metals
Re-melting of recycled metal is
becoming more and more important due to saving of energy and reduced
environmental disposal. As an example, aluminium is a metal with a high price
where the re-melting energy corresponds to about 5 % of the virgin metal
production cost. But conventional reuse of the metal alloys has represented a
degradation of the quality as most of the recycled metal has ended as casting
alloys. Work is carried out to improve the refining of a metal melt for removal
of the critical alloy elements. This, however, is very difficult but sometimes
necessary for special applications. The cheapest and simplest technique is to do
a proper separation in the solid phase of the material. Therefore, improving the
separation processes of the metals and different alloy categories will further
enhance the recycling of such products.
