Optical
sorting
Optical separation and
identification is widely used by different industries. Lately the importance of
material recycling has created new requirements and needs for separation
generally. The need for utilising all type of materials in a better way has lead
to a stronger focus on reuse and recycling of materials. Especially, recycling
of metals, plastics, glass, building materials and sorting of large mineral
particles is growing rapidly.
For this market Comex has developed a new optical
sorting system based on a complex image analysis. It makes it possible to
separate or identify different material particles regarding their colour, shape,
pattern, size and indirectly their composition. The sorted material is analysed
on the moving transport belt. An image system employing standard and thermal
cameras scans the image providing the input signals for a processing system. The
same system can be used for both material sorting and identification or
characterisation without necessary separation. The optical system has
successfully been tested for sorting and identifying metal and mineral particles
providing high separation efficiency in the range of 70-99
%.
The main advantage of this system is connected with its universality and at the
same time very sophisticated image processing functions. The use of recently
developed sophisticated commercial software makes it very competitive compared
to systems that has been on the market for a long time.
